Quick Update From Me

I attended the hospital this afternoon. It was confirmed that my problem is osteo-arthritis. They did not drain any fluid as apparently this is quite common with this condition and, as the cyst is at the back of the knee where all the arteries and veins run, they are not keen on doing procedures there.

I ended up having injections of steroids into both knees. The doctor did warn me that this would probably put my blood sugars up for a few days (oh joy, could have done without that) but he did tell me not to worry about it.

He said the injections can work wonders in many people but in others they have no effect whatsoever. Naturally I am hoping to be in the class of people they work wonders for! That is in the hands of God.

If the injections do fail, it will mean knee replacements in both legs and take up the next couple of years of my life so I shall be using all my powers of prayer that I shall be lucky. The doctor also said that a flare-up such as I have had/am having often burn themselves out and with the injections to help this could be the case with me.

I have my appointment with my breast surgeon the week after next so I am hoping for an improvement long before then. I know I must try and stay positive. At the moment both knees are very painful from where the injections were put in, if you had seen the length of the needle you would know why. I did not look but Becky was stunned that at least six inches of needle went in.

I would like to thank Sandra for the lovely card she sent to me. Sandra, I took it in my bag with my today. It really cheered me up and gave me extra courage so big hugs to you.

Now I am off to have my evening meal and try and get some rest as I feel exhausted after days of tension waiting to go, the journey and having the treatment.

I hope to get back to you soon.

Love Jeannette

  1. Hello Jeannette, I feel the pain of those injections. I've had them in my shoulder and years ago in one of my hips. Ouchie! But mine did work and we'll be praying that the ones you got will work too~so that you'll soon have relief in your knees. This getting old business is for the birds, seems like everyday there's something new that hurts. Someone once said that the only thing golden about the golden years is our urine. Praying also for good news when you see the surgeon...take care and I hope you're feeling better soon! Linda in Washington

  3. I've had the steroid shots in both knees. The first time it really helped me. After that, it did nothing for me at all.

  4. Hi Jeanette, So glad that you were able to have the injections today. I know that my friend Pam has to have the injections in her spine every 4 months and inbetween times has morphine patches and that keeps her on her feet ...And last week I had to take Mary to the Orthopeadic Surgeon about her arthritic knees however although inder normal circumstances he would offer two replacements unforunatley he did not think in her circumstances he could do so (she has cerabal palsy and when she was young muscle transplants in her knee..) she too has to have injections when she has a flare up even if the only alleviate the pain for a few weeks... We are for sure keeping our health service on their toes !!
Try to keep smiling love. You are always in my prayers.
    Love Sybil xx

  5. Hello Jeannette,

I am so pleased you have got some treatment for your poor knees, you sound very positive so I hope the injections will work for you. I have heard quite a few people tell me that they have had them and I`ve not yet heard any of them say anything negative about them. I`m glad you felt the card worked for you, at least I was there with you in spirit that way. Take care my friend. :o)

    Love and Hugs

  11. Dear Jeannette....hope you get comfort from the Injections. I have had three in my problem Knee(after fall),but not recently, and it did work at the time. Was offered knee replacement sometime ago, but declined while ever I can manage.Too many other things going on just now.Just been in hospital again,Laser treatment for Cancer in Situ in the Orapharynx. now being referred to ENT to investigate in the throat area. This along with the Diabetes gets me down at times, but keep going, and hope for better days for us both.

  15. I am very glad you have had a procedure with some hope of relief even though there was pain involved in having it. I do hope you are able to opt for anything but surgery. I am presently trying my best to walk which is helping my knees and legs. So far it is going pretty well. The doctor is pleased. It was good to hear from you as I was wondering what had happened since you wrote last. I had not heard of such a bad flairup of swelling. Glad the doctor was able to reassure you that it was pretty common with the condition you have and lull your fears. Good luck on your next breast exam! I do remember details of that ordeal. You have had some real pain and suffering.

  16. I am so proud of you... Those needles sound nasty but will be worth it when they help you feel better... I can't believe Becky was able to watch, I don't think I could of... Hope you are feeling much better tomorrow... Hugs! :)

  17. Dear Jeannette,
I hope and pray the steroid injections work for you. I know all about those long needles. I had fluid taken off my knee years ago. Very painful it was. Sorry I haven't been blogging so much. Things are just crazy here at times and I don't have the quiet to concentrate on writing. Very soon I will have my own house and get back to blogging again. Hope all is well with Mike and the grandsons. Have a wonderful thanksgiving holiday.
    Love,
    Cindy

  24. My sweet Jeannette,

PAIN, it is a word that makes my heart escalate. I must confess I do not have a high rate of pain so therefore this whole process I am going through especially after a chemotherapy treatment I cry a lot.
I think of you so often and sure hope that I can continue to read your blog.
