The older homes didn't have outside plumbing.. Your description is just how I remembered--going outside..LOL.. At my great-aunt's home, she didn't have newspaper, but corn husks! Even the bed's had corn husks stuffed in them for matresses.. Nothing to waste-and very organic!! I still remember seeing my great aunt sitting on the chamber pot. Not a good memory, but I was so unaccustomed to it, I can't get it out of my mind. I was 5.
