Feeling Patriotic

Photobucket

I was listening to some old songs last night from my CD collection and thinking about things in general. You know, the state of the world today, how things have changed. I thought of all the scandals recently about the allowances paid to Members of Parliament, the number of firms closing down, rising unemployment figures and now, it would seem, everybody is knocking our National Health Service.

Whilst it may not be perfect it still remains one of the best models in the world, nobody is turned away, health care is free to all but those who wish to pay privately can do, so we have the best of both worlds. I myself and many people I know have very good reason to be thankful for our Health Service.

It made me think of how much I love England, although born in Wales, that was merely due to circumstances brought about by the last war, both my brothers were born in England and I returned as just a tiny tot. I have always taken great pride in England. So, I decided to play around on the computer this morning (the housework can wait!) and make something to post on here.

I do appreciate that England is part of Great Britain, but I could not find, nor do I know of any songs about Great Britain, so I ask my friends in Scotland, Wales and Ireland to forgive my indulgence.

We are all part of one nation and a small national at that and we have fought against each other in historic times and stood together in times of national conflict and wars that threatened our way of life. So, this song is really for all of us Brits and my friends in America, Canada and all my visitors from all other countries can enjoy the photographs of England and the music.
I hope you enjoy my efforts:-

Our island nation has stood through invasions, plagues, wars and our fighting spirit has always brought us through. Thousands of years of history and tradition. Whatever the future holds, we will face it and overcome it as we always have.

We may moan and groan, that is the nature of humanity, but we have a very great deal to be grateful for compared to many other countries. We are riddled with political correctness today for fear of offending others. So today I decided to wave the flag and why not? I am totally sick of people being worried to show patriotism.

I am very proud to be British and always will be, proud of my roots which lie in Scotland, Ireland and England. I am proud of my ancestors who fought for our freedom today, I am proud of our troops fighting and dying right now. I am very proud of England.

  6. It is so very good to hear someone that is proud to be what they are...I'm proud to be an American too! I have a lot of ancestry that goes back over the ocean to your part of the world from my mother'
s side of the family and also to Hungary where my father's folks came from...They came for many varied reasons and some long before others, but our heritage matters as that is what we are made up of. It is always much better to be proud of what you stand for and not ashamed. Sometimes I think that is half what is wrong with the world. So much negativity is hard to take and I always prefer optimism any day. Good to hear from you and thanks so much for taking the time to put a video together for us all to see.

  11. Always been impressed with the British people, esp during the blitz. Hard times show what a people are really made of. Here's this tiny island with folks standing together with no real help from their biggest ally except money, and facing down the hun. It's inspiring and notable. Even now when I hear Winnie's voice doing those inspiring radio talks "We will fight them on the land..." etc., I realize just how much British people had to endure. And did. By the time the States were forced in by the Japanese, the real dangers had already been fought back by English men and women, and I'm not ashamed to admit that. I hear Brits down-grading their country, their gov'mt, their heritage, their monarchy, even their speech - and I think they may've forgotten when life and death held hands. "The troubles" is another example of sacrifice in the name of what one believes. I applaud and salute the English people for their decency and courage in the face of some of the worst evils mankind ever stirred up.

  12. I agree, you should be proud of where you come from. I'm very proud to be Welsh, but also proud to be British :)

As for the NHS, I think we're very lucky in this country. I know it's not perfect, and I have had some trouble getting the care I need for my agoraphobia, but I know that it has helped a great many people whose need was more desperate than mine and who may not have had the care they require in another country at all. And as for those who think it's not good enough - well, that's what private health care is for!

  15. Excellent timings on the video and a great selection of images. We should be proud of our country, and not ashamed or embarrassed to be English as seems the norm these days. There is no such thing as a perfect country, every single one in the world has issues that could be improved and England and Britain for that matter is no exception, but at least we have a vibrant history and a wealth of historical buildings and beautiful countryside that many others do not have and I guess that if it really is so bad here, we wouldn't have so many immigrants clambering both legally and illegally to get in!!!
